In the geeky world of coffee is something called the Cup of Excellence…… but what is it?
The Cup of Excellence is an annual competition held in several countries with the aim of identifying the highest quality coffees produced. It is organised by the Alliance for Coffee Excellence and has the unique feature that the winning coffees are graded and sold in Internet Auctions .
The concept helps to develop methodologies for the creation of new “gourmet” or high-quality speciality coffees that are of a very high grade.
The Cup of Excellence competition has been likened to the ‘Oscars’ of the coffee world’. As part of the competition, all the coffees are tested several times to make sure that a result isn’t just a freak and to prove a consistency.
Also linked to this is the SCA Rating for coffees. The SCA is the Speciality Coffee Association which is a trade body which has members from coffee farmers right through to roasters and baristas. Members are based all around the globe encompassing every element of the coffee trade. The SCA is a unifying force in the coffee industry and through its efforts works make coffee better by raising standards worldwide and helping trading of coffee to be fair and sustainable whilst maintaining and improving quality.
To help with this coffees are graded using a numbered scale. Coffees scoring 80 or more are classed as speciality . as you may expect in the super geek level of coffee the process for grading is very detailed and the system scores the coffee including aspects such as fragrance, aroma, flavour, aftertaste , acidity, body and sweetness to arrive at an overall score . Basically any coffee with a score intop 80’s and 90’s is going to be good * *as long as its brewed well!
At Caffe Velo Verde you may have seen us brewing recently using V60 pour over filters which is a fabulous way to brew high grade speciality coffees. Brewing using this method allows you to taste the coffee fully without milk and its textures to get in the way. The pour over filter gives a really clean tasting brew and you can fully appreciate the subtle taste flavours whether they be a fruitiness or chocolate tones. Once your palette develops and you begin to fully appreciate the tastes this is a brilliant way to drink speciality coffee.
Over the coming weeks we will be introducing some new coffees to our range to enjoy brewed using the pour over method. There is visual theatre to this method as well as a world of tastes to explore.
The first #49 coffee will be a Rwandan coffee that scored very high and won a Cup of Excellence award….. We love it and are sure that you will too!
